Background

The vehicle presented with the instrument-panel warnings “PARK BRAKE FAULT” and “CANNOT APPLY PARK BRAKE”. The electronic parking brake could not be relied upon to apply, making this a current safety-related fault rather than a historic allegation.

A garage had also reported that the parking-brake motor assembly was not receiving the required signal. The absence of a stored internal parking-brake-module fault code did not establish that the wider system was serviceable; signal, power, earth, connector or communication failure remained credible.

Technical Issue or Dispute

The assessment combined the physical inspection findings with an Autel diagnostic scan, dashboard images, garage findings, customer-supplied photographs of the fuse-box and wiring, MOT history and Jaguar Technical Bulletin JTB00377NAS1.

No complete wiring-harness or junction-box strip-down was undertaken. The report therefore separated what the available evidence established from what still required continuity testing, electrical load testing and controlled dismantling.

Evidence Examined

Confirmed fault: The vehicle itself displayed the parking-brake warnings and the system could not apply normally.

Historic moisture evidence: White, green and brown spotting or residue in the relevant fuse-box and wiring area was consistent with previous moisture exposure.

Previous intervention: Supplied photographs showed wiring that appeared altered or previously joined, inconsistent with an undisturbed factory harness.

Progressive mechanism: Corrosion, staining and altered wiring are progressive conditions and were unlikely to have developed solely during 1,862 miles of ordinary use.

Findings

On the balance of probabilities, the leading cause of the electronic parking-brake failure was moisture-related deterioration and corrosion within the central-junction-box, wiring-harness or connector area. An earlier incomplete wiring repair may also have been contributing.

The underlying deterioration was more likely than not present or developing when the vehicle was supplied. The evidence did not support owner-caused damage, misuse or ordinary wear arising solely during the limited ownership period.

The precise failed conductor, terminal, junction box or module remained dependent upon controlled strip-down, continuity testing and electrical load testing. The vehicle should not return to unrestricted use until the defect has been correctly diagnosed, repaired and the parking brake has repeatedly applied and released normally.
